Stephen and Square Mile
It is with sadness that we announce that Stephen Morrissey is now moving on from his role at Square Mile Coffee Roasters.
After some serious discussion and thought both Stephen and I think this makes sense – to enable him to really get the most from the unique opportunities for growth and travel that he now has as World Barista Champion. Stephen, quite rightly, wants to take every opportunity to learn and develop (just as I did last year), so it seems selfish to do anything other than share him with the rest of the world who are (quite rightly) beating a path to his door, and taking him around the world to teach and share. Stephen is an incredible ambassador for both great coffee and the craft of the barista, and that will doubtless continue.
Many of you may have been aware how much he has traveled and how varied and exciting it has been. We want nothing more for Stephen than for this kind of travel and learning to continue, and we are looking forward to seeing and hearing about the places he will go and the people he will meet.
We are, of course, still good friends and we look forward to maintaining a close relationship in the future. We also want to take the opportunity to thank Stephen for the work he put into getting Square Mile off the ground, and there will be many of us in London that will miss him being here.
Wow, this sure is news. I think Stephen is already doing a fantastic job as a specialty coffee ambassador and I’m excited to see where he will take it.
Will Stephen stay in London or is he officially a nomade now? Or is it back to Ireland? Guess I should ask him on his blog…

Well, I’m excited to see where stephen will go and what he will do, but I’m sad to see him leave before Square Mile came to complete fruition.

Indeed, this is quite a development for us here in London, and as you say Deaton, surely not a decision that was reached lightly. As I understand it, as his housemate, Stephen will be based in Ireland.
Professionally I’m sorry that London loses such a great coffee personality and ambassador. Personally I’m sad that Buckfast Street loses it’s resident of the smaller bedroom, and that someone who has become a good friend won’t be around.
To Stephen, James & Anette, – I hope each of your personal and professional ambitions, objectives and plans are realised, in whatever capacity they entail.

Wow, although somewhat expected. James, Anette, I feel your pain, as a roaster and shopkeeper, it is hard to loose those you love. And yet, in so many ways it is about exactly what you are doing. Stephen go spread the word, the passion, and do us all proud. Drink every moment in, and leave the coffee world upset in your wake. There is much to upset, and much to learn. I wish in many ways that I could tag along. Hopefully our paths will cross at some COE or Best of event. Have a Merry Christmas all of you.

I’d also like to add my best wishes to all – Stephen, James & Annette – all of whom collectively, and indivually, continue to challenge and inspire those of us in the world coffee.
I’m also totally confident that this will continue to be the case wherever they find themselves.
